Happy Halloween?

Halloween Candy, originally uploaded by TomMartinArt.
I just learned that child slavery is an integral part of making chocolate for most companies in the US.  You can read more about it here.  Maybe this will get me to stop eating chocolate.

The Motherhood Mandate

loveinfinity, originally uploaded by yyellowbird.
According to "Half the Human Experience: The Psychology of Women," 92% of women will marry and 90% of those women will have at least one child.

This is kind of scary to think about!
(Check out Yyellowbird's photography on Flickr!  She's brilliant!)

Flickr Stalker

, originally uploaded by dalobeee.
I go on Flickr regularly to look at random photos. Today, I saw a thumbnail of a girl in a bra with tattoos. I thought to myself, "That's a cute hair cut" and clicked the photo. Sure enough, it was a cute hair cut, but oddly enough I know the girl. It kind of weirded me out. She takes really good photos- primarily of herself. Should I add her as a contact?

I feel like such a stalker.

Regretsy: Handmade? It looks like you made it with your feet.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Etsy. Once in a while, I find something good, but most of the time it's like sifting through a pile of shit. This is where Regretsy comes in. It's a blog dedicated to showcasing these less than desirable items. Dolls made with human bones, paintings depicting corn dogs on a plane, and hair accessories constructed with Barbie dolls, are just some of the items they have featured.

(Thanks for letting me know about this site Danielle!)

Got Blood on Your Hands?

Dexter Bloodslide Soap by Bloodbath
These soaps would be the perfect gift for any Dexter fan.  They are even blood orange scented!

Move over Kanye

I find this type of music extremely annoying- but it overall I think this video is entertaining and somewhat clever.

It's fall and I'm exhausted from midterms and writing essays. Did I mention I only got three hours of sleep the night before last?

Where the Wild Things Are

I just got back from seeing "Where the Wild Things Are." I really liked it. I've been taking classes on childhood development and I thought that they did a good job portraying children realistically. I thought that it was interesting how they showed Max externalizing, but didn't spend too much time showing what lead to it.

Overall, I think that it's an interesting movie for children and adults alike.  I especially enjoyed the scenes with Bob and Terry.

911 Call

The sound is kind of messed up on this video, but I still thought that it was worth posting.

Women in Space: A Response

This post is in response to the Popgadget article, "Women had The Right Stuff to be early astronauts, but their timing was lousy."

How could this be "the women's fault"?

The US military discriminated against women by not allowing them into their pilot training programs and then NASA only recruited military pilots. If you think that this just happens to be a coincidence or was done simply out of convenience you are sadly mistaken. NASA fully understood the implications of what they were doing. This article specifically demonstrates the types of institutionalized discrimination we've grown accustom to in America.

Frankly, I'm surprised that Popgadget (a site geared towards women) would post such an article on their site. Most readers of the original article "Why NASA Barred Women Astronauts" by Henry Spencer, would be aware of the lack of acknowledgment of sexism on decision making and the obvious biases of the author. Below the article are some constructive comments to that effect. I believe that the author of this post should have better evaluated the original article and spent more time researching the topic before propagating this offensive viewpoint.

UPDATE:  Popgadget refused to post my comment on their site.  If you were also offended by their article please write to them at info@popgadget.net.

Halloween Costume

Photobucket
Saxon Halloween 2007, originally uploaded by alida saxon.
It's October, time to start thinking about Halloween costumes! If you use the internet fairly regularly you may recognize "helmet cat." I found this picture of a costume based off of it, and thought it was funny and clever. Kind of geeky too.

Education and Career Training

In a Psychology Class
Teacher: I want you to evaluate this case study. I actually had to analyze this exact one for a job interview.
Girl: Well, did you get the job?
Teacher: Uh, no. . . but I didn't really want it anyway.

Purple Carrots?

Photobucket
Courtesy of the World Carrot Museum
I was drinking some juice today that contained purple carrots. What's that all about? I looked online and apparently carrots come in a few colors. Who would have thought?  According to World Carrot Museum,
"Have you ever seen a purple carrot? How about white, yellow, red or black? Most people haven't, even though such carrots have existed for hundreds of years. . . Carrots were originally purple or red, with a thin root. The orange colour did not become popular until the 1500's when patriotic Dutch growers developed the vegetable by selective breeding to make it less bitter than the yellow varieties, and then it was adopted it as the Royal vegetable in honour of the House of Orange, the Dutch Royal Family."

Weird Beard

Take THAT Jack Passion! from sarah sporik on Vimeo.

I just discovered the Beard·Revue a blog dedicated to beards. It has some pretty funny stuff on it. Funny beard merchandise, books, illustrations, and more. I saw this video on there and thought it was pretty unique.

Read any good blogs lately?

What are your favorite blogs? I've lost interest in all the ones I used to read. I can't seem to find any really unique ones.

Anyway, isn't this print cute?

Old Oregon Trail

Remember Old Oregon Trail?! I just found a website where you can play it online. It's so fun and a lot easier to play as an adult. I did pretty good, even though I still suck at hunting and Danielle died while we were fording the river.

Letter to Owen Pallett

Dear Mr. Pallett,

You are truly a brilliant violinist. I love your album "He Poos Clouds" and the work you did with the band Arcade Fire. The song "Many Lives 49 MP" is beautiful and one of my favorites. In addition to that, I also find you very attractive. It's okay that you are gay though, I know that I'd never have a chance with you.

Anyway, I just saw on Youtube that you covered the Mariah Carey song, "Fantasy," at one of your shows. Why?! Why would you do such a thing?! Your brilliance has been diminished by this lapse in taste.

I will never be able to think about you in the same way.
